  • Chinese Mosin Nagant Type 53 Carbine in 7.62x54R. Manufactured in 1954 by State Arsenal 296 in Chongqing in southwestern China, according to the '296' stamped on the barrel shank.
  • A licensed copy of the Soviet M44 Mosin Nagant Carbine, the Type 53 was produced by State Arsenal 296 using old Russian machinery purchased from the Soviet Union as they began to manufacture replacements for their own Mosin Nagants. The Type 53 was used extensively by the Chinese People's Liberation Army until its replacement in the 1960s; with the People's Militia during the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution; and with foreign nations like North Vietnam, who used them heavily during the Vietnam War.
  • This particular rifle is an earlier production model, given the presence of the early '296' factory code on the barrel shank. This was replaced in 1955 with the number 26 in a triangle, believed to have been done to hide the rifle's origins if found in the hands of guerrilla fighters. It has the date '1954.12' also on the barrel shank, indicating it was produced in December of 1954. The rifle is missing its bayonet & Cleaning Rod and is not all-matching.
