- Russian Mosin Nagant M44 Carbine chambered in 7.62x54R. Manufactured in 1944 by the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant.
- Based on the earlier M38 Mosin Nagant, the M44 carbine was designed to improve upon and replace the M38. The new M44 would feature a side-mounted cruciform bayonet which had a slight cut-out made into the stock to accomodate it. With prototypes produced in 1943, it officially entered service with the Red Army in 1944. In this first year alone, approximately 3,700,000 M44s would be manufactured by the Soviet arsenals at Tula and Izhevsk. with Tula only making an estimated 100,000 of these. The M44 saw heavy useage in the hands of the Red Army during the Second World War, and upon its replacement was exported to Soviet-aligned forces around the world. It was also manufactured under license by Soviet allies, including the Chinese (who designated theirs the Type 53), Hungary (known as the FEG 48M carbine), and Poland (with the Kbk wz. 44).
- This particular rifle was manufactured by the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant (today known as Kalashnikov Concern) in 1944, and had the accompanying date and Izhevsk manufacturer's mark on the reciever. Sometime during its time with the Red Army, it was sent to the Arsenal No.1 repair depot of the Soviet Main Artillery and Missile Directorate in Balakleya, Ukraine. It bears the accompanying repair depot marking square with a forward slash through it on the rifle's reciever above the date of manufacture and has also had a replacement stock produced by Arsenal No.1 which bears the same repair depot marking on the left-hand-side near the butt plate.
- The M44 is all-matching, and the floor plate was factory force-matched by the repair depot and as such bears two different serial numbers, one with a line through it.
