A Russian-contract Model 1895 manufactured by Winchester in 1916. The tang of the rifle bears the text "MODEL 1895 - WINCHESTER - TRADE MARK REG U.S. PAT OFF & FGN." The top of the receiver bears the oval 'WP' Winchester proof mark above the text "7.62 M.M." while the left-hand side of the receiver contains a double-striking of the Winchester patent information.
This rifle is one of approximately 295,000 Winchester M1895 rifles ordered by the Russian Empire during the First World War. This rifle saw service with the Russian Imperial Army, and the right-hand side of the receiver and barrel (beneath the handguard) both bear the Cyrillic '[ХиЗ]' acceptance stamp. Additionally, the left-hand side of the barrel beneath the forend bears the text "- NICKEL STEEL BARREL - ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" and the caliber "7.62 M/M." These rifles arrived in Russia between 1915 and 1917, with the last shipment arriving in February of 1917 shortly before the February Revolution which led to the overthrow of the Tsar, and the subsequent Russian Civil War. Many of these rifles were lost or destroyed during the First World War and Civil War, while most remained in Soviet stores after the wars.
In order to be fit for service in the Russian Imperial Army, it was requested that these rifles be chambered for the 7.62x54R cartridge used by existing Russian Mosin-Nagant rifles. Additionally, it features a bridge over the receiver which allows it to be loaded using original Mosin-Nagant stripper clips. These rifles are exceedingly rare, and this piece would make a phenomenal addition to any military or Winchester-themed collection.
