The Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk II represents the final major development of Britain's renowned Lee-Enfield military service rifle, combining the proven design of the wartime No. 4 series with refinements introduced during the post-war period. This rifle, serial number PF236279, was manufactured at the Royal Ordnance Factory Fazakerley in Liverpool, England, in March 1952, as confirmed by its receiver markings, "No4Mk2(F)" and "3/52".
Introduced in 1949, the No. 4 Mk II incorporated several improvements over the earlier wartime No. 4 Mk I, most notably a redesigned trigger arrangement mounted directly to the receiver rather than the trigger guard. This modification provided a more consistent trigger pull by reducing the influence of timber movement on the trigger mechanism. The Mk II retained the Lee-Enfield's well-established rear-locking bolt action, ten-round detachable box magazine and aperture sighting system, chambered in the traditional .303 British cartridge.
The Royal Ordnance Factory at Fazakerley was one of Britain's principal military rifle manufacturers, producing No. 4 rifles during and after the Second World War. The post-war Mk II rifles represented the culmination of decades of Lee-Enfield development and were among the last newly manufactured bolt-action service rifles produced for British military use before the transition to the self-loading L1A1 rifle.
This particular rifle retains its traditional full-length military timber furniture, complete with fore-end, upper handguards, metal barrel bands and adjustable rear aperture sight. The light-coloured timber displays considerable handling marks, scratches and surface wear consistent with its age, while the metalwork exhibits general finish wear. The bore is rated 7/10, indicating good internal condition relative to the rifle's age. The bolt is non-matching to the receiver.
