Excellent pre-war German K98k rifle manufactured in 1938 by Mauser-Werke at their Oberndorf am Neckar factory. This rifle is one of the estimated 190,000 manufactured by Mauser in 1938, with the receiver stamped "42" above "1938" ('42' being Mauser's covert manufacturer's code between 1938-1940, and '1938' being the year of manufacture).
This rifle was issued to the German army, and bears the accompanying army acceptance stamp (an eagle over the letter 'H') on the right-hand side of its buttstock. This rifle is a perfect early example of Germany's transition from walnut to laminate stocks on its rifles, which only began in 1937 and finished in 1941. These laminate stocks were subjected to extensive testing, and proved both stronger, cheaper, and quicker to manufacture than the original walnut ones.
The rifle is in very good condition, with no pitting or rust present on the metalwork and a great finish. The barrel is in phenomenal condition too, along with the woodwork which has none of the usual cosmetic marks and damaged finish usually seen on these rifles.
Almost all of the rifle is completely matching, with everything barring the small capture screws, rear sight ramp and slide, and cleaning rod.
Fewer and fewer of these pre-war K98k rifles can be found today, let alone one manufactured by Mauser-Werke themselves in such incredible condition. This would be an excellent piece to add to any collection!
